Bat Components

When selecting a baseball bat for your son, you need to take some things into consideration. There are many different brands of bats that come in different weights and lengths. Thankfully, with such a wide variety of products, it will not be hard to find your son a quality bat.

Price

First, you're going to want to set a price range. Generally, youth baseball bats will run anywhere from $40-$200. While I think it's somewhat ridiculous to spend $200 on a bat at such a low level, it's really none of my business. Ultimately, I would recommend selecting a bat in the $75-$150 range.

Size & Weight

Next, you're going to want to figure out the correct size and length of your bat. I have provided a detailed table below to show you the exact bat size your son will need. The general notion is, you want the heaviest, longest bat that your son is capable of swinging with the most amount of speed possible. If you sacrifice speed for weight you are making a big mistake. At this stage in their baseball career, the last thing you want to do is put too heavy of a bat in their hands.

Regulations

Make sure you look into your league's guidelines on bats. Due to all the different youth leagues that exist, there is no universal rules on bat size and weight. The Little League Baseball organization requires that all bats are no longer than 33 inches long and no more than 2 1/4 inches in diameter.

The Bat Doesn't Make the Batter

Some parents believe that buying the most expensive bat will mean guaranteed results. This is not true. You should never expect a bat to produce results for the player. If you want to improve your child's performance at the plate, you are better off spending time helping him practice. Repetition is the best way to gain skill in any sport and it is no different in baseball.

With that being said, it would be more wise to spend a little less on a baseball bat and, in turn, use the rest to invest into hitting lessons for your child. A young player will outgrow a baseball bat, but he will never outgrow the knowledge and feel of the fundamentals of a good baseball swing.

There you have it. That is the basic knowledge needed for selecting a youth baseball bat. If you take what you have learned in this article you will make bat shopping a whole lot easier on yourself. Good luck to you and your child!
