Revolutionary Quotes

On July 4th 1776, a group of men, representing a new, idealistic world, declared that no man should should be subject to the laws of tyranny and oppression. Influenced by John Locke's idea of natural rights, these brave men stated that all men are created equal and that all men deserve the freedom that is entitled to them upon their birth. Their convictions produced one of the most significant documents in history and cleared the path for an enlightened world.

Through much debate and wise council our Founding Fathers risked their lives for the Liberty of our country. This article is my selection, with commentary, of the top five quotes from the Revolutionary War.

5. "I have accepted a seat in the [Massachusetts] House of Representatives, and thereby have consented to my own ruin, to your ruin, and the ruin of our children. I give you this warning, that you may prepare your mind for your fate." - John Adams, to Abigail Adams, May 1770

This quote, to me, is truly amazing. John Adams makes it evident that his election to the Massachusetts House of Representatives is a great burden that must be accepted by, not only him, but his entire family. This, to me, shows how much character Adams possessed. He knew that it was his duty to serve his country and he also knew that, in order to do it well, his family life would have to suffer.

4. "We must all hang together, or assuredly we shall all hang separately." - Benjamin Franklin at the signing of the Declaration of Independence

Only by collectively staying true to the cause of Liberty were the Founding Fathers able to accomplish such a noble victory.

3. "I must study politics and war that my sons may have liberty to study mathematics and philosophy." - John Adams

Another great one from Adams. It is in our children that our country's fate lies. We must work to protect the rights of the next generation so that they can can create solutions to the problems we aren't able to solve. By properly educating our youth we can create a bright future.

2. "I only regret that I have but one life to lose for my country." - Nathan Hale's last words before being hanged by British

At 21 years of age, Nathan Hale was hanged for treason against the Royal Crown. Hale was a spy for the Continental Army. I can't imagine the amount of courage it must take for a man to hold firm in his beliefs moments before dying by the hands of his enemy. This proves that a man fighting for a just cause cannot be broken even by death.

The Founding Fathers knew that the consequences would be great if they failed to achieve Independence. However, their respect for God Almighty and their passion for Liberty was much greater than their concern over their personal well being. We, as Americans, are blessed to live in a nation founded by such truly great men.

I never really understood the hardships these people and others like them were prepared to endure for freedom. It is very humbling.
